Introduction:

This module focuses on Yellow Face, a play by David Henry Hwang. Hwang figures as the chief character in the play and confronts two basic questions: “Who am I?” and “Who are we?” These questions have been tackled by other playwrights this semester and have been explored in very different ways from that found in Yellow Face.

Learning Objectives:

By participating in this module, students will be able to:

1. Recognize the unique approach to representation of the play as produced by Youtube.

2. Consider the dilemma of the chief character as he struggles to come to grips with his own identity both as a man and as a playwright.

3. Identify the various media techniques used to tell the story that are told in a very different way from what they might be on the stage.

Tasks:

Read the play which is available in the university bookstore, or thru vendors or the library.

7.1 Copy the Worksheet for Yellow Face and paste it into a separate page linked to your portfolio page. Answer all the questions posed about the play and it's structure.

7.2 Read the attached material concerning the play. It was drawn from a section of a study guide developed for the play. In the space below respond to this material in term of your own evaluation of the play.

7.3 Watch the Youtube adaptation of the play below. The staging of this play, as produced by Youtube, reveals some unusual approaches to design which were probably not possible on a proscenium stage. In the discussion space below the two videos, list examples of some of the methods used that could probably not be as effectively used on the stage as they are on Youtube. Choose the individual who is best able to articulate these features in the discussion space below. Comment on his/her description as replies to their discussion.
